Eleksyon 2013

Vote buying... Tell-tale signs of political immaturity and poverty.

If your vote can be bought, you dont deserve your democratic right, what you deserve is the awful candidate who you helped cheat.

Can you imagine how much more that person will have to take/steal in order to make up for all the purchased votes?!

Wait... You dont honestly believe that someone who had the gall to cheat their way into elected positions would have an honorable bone in their body, do you?!? All those promises she made? Whoosh!!! Gone!

Congratulations, you didnt just pimp your vote... You sold your soul and your future. Goodluck with that.

Top Notch : Mercury Drug

I want to take this moment to just express my appreciation for the top notch service delivered by Mercury Drug's branch personnel. I was looking for an antibiotic that ended up being unavailable due to a supplier issue, and their branch personnel made an effort to look for Ilosone DS and Ilosone for me.

I am especially thankful to the personnel of the following branches:

  • BF Resort Las Pinas
  • Talon Singko
  • ATC-Madrigal
  • ATC Zapote-Alabang
  • Manila Harrison Plaza
  • Malate San Andres
  • Malate Taft Estrada

For your patience, kindness, understanding, and for providing me with service with a smile that kept part of me from totally losing it... I am truly grateful. :)

A cup of comfort

Have been sick for the past 2 weeks - it was caused by a lot of things, but stress played a big part in it.

So this morning, as I alighted the bus, I made a conscious effort to make this day a bit brighter and made a bee line for Seattles Best Coffee.

Thank you for my free cup of coffee (August journal treat), for warming up this old bag of fat and bones, and for bringing a smile to my lips with my warm sweet salted caramel mocha.

Musings of a Weary Traveler

Today, I had to walk from the World Trade Center to Buendia-LRT station, I took a jeep from there only because I was conscious about the time.

I honestly don't mind walking (when wearing flats); the heat, pollution, uneven-constantly-being-repaired-roads, and the horde of commuters, stragglers, and strangers were the only things that bothered me.

I admit that discipline is an issue on the road - but to single out the "provincial" buses? That’s like using safety scissors to mow the lawn; it’ll get the job done, eventually, just not efficiently nor effectively.

Traffic and corruption is still rampant and aggravated by the unfinished public works, the unruly taxi, jeepney, kuliglig and pedicab drivers (yes, kuliglig and pedicabs on main thoroughfares), and don't get me started on the personal vehicles who insist on double- and triple-parking near and along the educational institutions in Manila.
Side comment: parking in Manila is a huge issue. Roads (inner or main) shouldn't be converted into parking spaces haphazardly by the barangays.
It seems the LGUs are making decisions without looking at the bigger picture. Yung kani-kanila lang, wala na silang pakialam sa iba dahil hindi naman nila ka-siyudad. Unfortunately, common folk like us cannot leave and take residence anywhere we please (e.g., move from San Juan to Manila), buy private vehicles, ride cabs regularly, transfer schools or jobs on a whim.

Maybe, these are just birth pains. Maybe things will work out.  Maybe they will see reason, or at least provide weary travelers with better options. On the bright side, I get my required number of steps done at the start of the day.

I’m just one small voice in a sea of taxpayers, regrettably the island is owned by the filthy and ridiculously rich.

Review | Reading Kingdom

Reading Kingdom commits to helping and providing online resources for kids to improve kids' reading skills. This follows their patented six skills method for reading success, which include sequencing, motor skills, phonics (phonemic awareness), meaning, grammar, and reading comprehension.

Reading Kingdom is great way for kids of all ages to learn reading the fun way. So much so that kids wont see reading as a chore, but as an activity that they will love. Reading Kingdom is also a very useful tool for both parents and educators as it not only gives them different means of teaching kids, it also keeps them up to date with technological trends, and makes them a part and partner of children's learning.

Although we just started using Reading Kingdom, I find the site useful and interesting. I am currently working on having it available on our other gadgets to make reading even more fun and easy for my little girl.

I give Reading Kingdom 2 thumbs up :)

Review | Crime & Passion by Chantel Rhondeau

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Chantel Rhondeau’s romantic suspense novel Crime & Passion is a romantic story about Madeline and Donovan; the perils that unfold throughout the story leave you thinking if the two of them can make it as a couple or will they allow tragedy and conflict to rip them apart.

As the story reaches its climax, the reader already gets a sense of how the author will end it. Minor twists, but a predictably happy ending nonetheless.

I am not a great big fan of romance novels. Murder mysteries, science fiction, these are more my cup of tea. However, there was something about the story that urged me to finish it. Was it the plotline or was it my need for closure? Dun-dun-duuuun!

Honestly though, it is a good and easy read with interesting characters. I applaud Ms. Rhondeau for this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre.

Strip Tease Gone Wrong

When I received a copy of the comic strip, I thought I had missed a frame. I was waiting for the punch line, unfortunately it never came.

The issue on sexual preference and the Catholic Church’s stand is relevant, but Mr. Medina’s take on it was distasteful. I don’t understand why he needed to sully the reputation of St. Scholastica’s College and the Sisters. Calling them (a derogatory term for) lesbians was not only uncalled for, it was a slap in the face of all religious vocations.

St. Scholastica’s College is an enlightened institution that advances socially relevant issues. For the past 100+ years it has borne strong women – leaders, politicians, business women, artists, wives, and mothers, each treating the other with affection. We are, after all, sisters.

I earned my College degree from St. Scholastica’s College. I love this school because it taught me to see things not in black, white, or gray, but in a full spectrum of color. At St. Scholastica’s College, we learned that everyone had rights, that each right had consequences, and that we should all be held accountable for them. SSC taught us tolerance - and beyond tolerance St. Scholastica’s College taught us love. Love of justice, truth, humanity; love of stewardship and of service; love of Mother Nature; love of good old fashioned hard work; love of excellence, brilliance, and of quality; love for the sciences and the arts; loving our Faith; loving ourselves. At St. Scholastica’s College, discipline and respect is essential, and we carried all of these values and virtues with us even as we traded our whites and blues for other colors, uniforms, and caps.

So yes, I am offended by the comic strip. For those who don’t understand, allow me to point out why:
  • The generalization that all Christians are hypocrites;
  • That girls from exclusive Catholic schools are lesbians;
  • Implying that the Benedictine sisters are lesbians; and
  • The fact that Mr. Medina singled out St. Scholastica’s College.

I don’t see the point of the strip. Was it to advance the cause of the LGBT Community? (I think it did the opposite, actually). Was it to pick on SSC? Did it want SSC to discriminate, box, and label its students according to creed, color, sexual preference, height, and weight? Or was it a careless stab at the Catholic Church? Either way, it was a sloppy, poorly executed joke.

It bothers me that even with the flak Mr. Medina has received over that strip, there is no apology, no sign of remorse. Instead, he declares that he is a victim of a conspiracy.

Another thing that bothers me is that the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s only action on the matter was to pull out Mr. Medina’s comic strip (pending further investigation). An apology came, but arrived too late and was too weak to be noticed. Really, if they were all for accuracy, fairness and good taste, would it have been released in the first place? It was a re-published strip – doesn't the Editorial Board have any control over the contents of their publication? I don’t want heads to roll and I don’t want it to be a witch hunt; I just want fairness to prevail.

It upsets me that a lot of people don’t see the reason for the uproar. I am disheartened but not angry. These people are entitled to their own opinion, but my Alma Mater and our Scholastican community taught me better than that.

A few thoughts on a little perspective

You read about kids walking for miles, braving the heat and the rain, crossing bridges, mountains and rivers in order to get to their public schools where they spend hours in cramped classrooms (if any), with barely any suitable supplies or tools for instruction. You think about how these kids and their parents (if any) sacrifice daily so that they can get a meager education. No "pamasahe", no "baon". Just their thirst for knowledge and hope for a better future to fuel them through out their school days.

But then you see a picture of a flooded street posted by a guy on a social networking site and his comments on how he hates that he has to cross a flooded street from his high rise condo just to go to class... Or maybe read someone's scathing remarks online about her parents because they're forcing upon her an education she doesn't want...

Poles apart situations. One brings tears to my eyes, another makes me cringe.

Sometimes we need a little perspective to appreciate what we have. But it isn't just for us to feel relieved and realize how better off we are. Hopefully, we also realize that we need to share what we have and perform acts of kindness for those who need it more.  [V]

Review | Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Soap

Happy to note that Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Soap is gentle enough for my sensitive skin. I was able to get one from the Sample Room, and tried it on my face - which I normally wouldn't do with a bar soap - and was pleasantly surprised that I didn't react negatively to it. In fact, my face felt softer and smoother.

Scent wise - Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Soap smells so clean. It is fragrant but not to the point of being irritating.

It lathers well - I was worried at first because most moisturizing soaps take forever to rinse off. Gladly, I was able to rinse it off quickly and thoroughly.

The immediate effect, as with most soaps, is that you feel clean; but unlike most anti-bacterial soaps there was no feeling of dryness after washing.

My take on it: I give it two thumbs up! Hmmm... Moringa-O2 is turning out to be one of my favorite brands.

Review | Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Facial Toner

I am so happy I was able to get a sample of the Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Facial Toner from Sample Room.

The Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Facial Toner is an alcohol-free toner manufactured by Ardent World, Inc. After washing my face with the Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Soap, I wiped my face with a cotton ball containing a few drops of the toner, and it was able to gently remove dirt that apparently was still on my face. I say gently because toners usually sting, and Moringa-O2's toner did not. I felt my face feel cooler, more relaxed, and "lighter". The word maginhawa comes to mind. It was like my face was able breathe.

To sum up the experience with Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Facial Toner
- The product smells wonderfully clean
- It feels good and does not sting at all
- It cleanses gently even as it gets rid of all the icky dirt
- It doesn't leave you with a sticky or red face

An added bonus is that Moringa-O2 uses only natural ingredients. Trust me, adding this to your beauty regimen will leave you with skin that is cleaner and healthier

Review | Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Moisturizing Lotion

Fell in love with Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Moisturizing Lotion! After ONE use, I can say that it is staying true to its packaging - it helps nourish and moisturize dry/sensitive skin (guilty as charged) - smoothens and softens (my hands have never felt smoother!) The skin renewal and anti-aging part, we'll see after a couple of weeks, but I am positive it will work wonders as well. Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Moisturizing Lotion smells surprisingly wonderful - I was half expecting to smell like food with the product having Malunggay and all, instead I have this clean and welcoming fragrance on my hands and fore arms. Nice! Applying it was a breeze too - it was easy to smooth on, it was not at all sticky, and it is so light the only proof of application is my yummy scent and ultra smooth hands. I am really happy I got a chance to try it on! Moringa-O2 Malunggay Herbal Moisturing Lotion is going to be a recurring item on my shopping list. --- To find out more about the product, check out Moringa-O2's facebook page here.

Review | Cure Natural Aqua Gel

I wouldn't normally gush over a product, but Cure Natural Aqua Gel is... "WOW"! Cure Natural Aqua Gel is an exfoliant that helps remove dead skin and dirt. You may even opt to use it on other parts of your body (I plan to :D!). Exfoliants are known to be a bit harsh, so I was surprised to find that Cure was not. I was expecting it to sting, but as I was rubbing it on my face, I didn't feel a thing. And after rinsing off the white particles (dead skin, dirt) my face felt much smoother, cleaner, and softer! That's just after ONE application! You may follow up the exfoliation with your daily skin care routine. The plus is that after you've exfoliated, your lotion, moisturizer, serum, and what-not will work more effectively. You don't have to use a whole lot if you're only exfoliating your face (pea size is ok). Plus, they recommend that you use it only TWICE (2x) a week to give your skin a chance to breathe and regenerate. Cure Natural Aqua Gel? Definitely a product worth gushing over. WOW!!! --- Find out more about Cure Natural Aqua Gel by checking out their local Facebook page here!

The SM Store | They Really Do Have It All

I love shopping at SM, particularly at SM Southmall which is a stones throw away from where I live. Especially now that it has been redesigned to enhance our shopping experience. It has everything, and more! The more being a less stressful means of shopping. It has become leisurely to the point that shopping isn't just shopping - it's an experience. Window shopping is fun at SM - for different reasons sometimes according to the season. During "tag-init" I enjoy air-conditioned store-hopping with my daughter, or having movie dates with the hubby at the cinema, or just lounging in our favorite food places while availing of the free wifi. When "tag-lamig" comes around, we still have our food-dates and movie-dates, but most of the time we keep toasty at the coffee houses. Their sales, seasonal displays and events are a sight to behold as well. My mall-mates know the shops I'm sure to visit. When at the Department Store, they often find me lurking around the shoe and bag sections. I was delighted to find that a recent purchase had such functional packaging! (see attached photo). This chic and affordable pair was purchased at SM Harrison Plaza on a whim - and I do _not_ regret the purchase. My Parisian wedges suits both my casual and business outfits, are quite comfy, and make my feet look pretty (not an easy feat! heehee) That's another thing I love about The SM Store. It is a shopper-friendly mall designed not only for form but for function as well. For more fashion do's, check out The SM Store's facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/TheSMStore
